What Is Coaching?
Coaching is a form of counseling. Similar to a consultant, a coach helps clients solve problems, reach goals, design a plan of action, and make decisions. In addition, the coach stays with the client to implement the plan of action, working through the inevitable changes and any obstacles. The coach helps the client maintain a healthy balance between the client's personal and professional life. The coach also keeps looking ahead to take advantage of opportunities which are just evolving. And the coach brings out the client's best, keeping focused on the client's needs, values, and vision.
The founder of Coach University and the father of life coaching, the late Mr. Thomas Leonard, described life coaching this way, "Until now, most humans have been too busy surviving and following the rules to fully develop themselves and make the most of what they've got... It's becoming very clear that we are now at that stage of human, societal and technological development where each person has not just the possibility to reach his or her own potential, but the probability of doing so if he or she can access the right tools and create a nurturing and challenging personal and professional environment."
How Is Coaching Different From Mentoring?
A mentor is an expert with knowledge in a particular field or within a particular company who can guide others to move forward within the company or field by benefiting from his or her experience. A coach is an expert on the development of people in general, and helps people move forward on their own unique path that may be very different from that of the coach. (Source: Coach University)
Does Coaching Work?
Here are some examples of the results that can be achieved by working with a coach.
A company president in his 60s searching for meaning in his life after surviving a medical crisis is using a coach to assist him in his quest. The coach has helped him ease into retirement, begin mentoring others in his industry and pursue other fulfilling activities such as community work.
A university professor overwhelmed with the challenge of juggling teaching and publishing responsibilities is relying on a coach to help get her professional life in order. The coach has helped her determine which projects are the most important to her, which she can let go, which tasks can be delegated to colleagues and how to better manage her workload.
The CEO of a successful advertising agency is using a coach to help her grow her business. The coach not only helps her evaluate each week's marketing efforts and acts as a sounding board for the week's problems but contributes his own ideas, such as a suggestion to set up "influencer" lunches to woo potential referrals. Because of the coach's support, the agency has begun signing new clients and meeting the CEO's goals.
